With the endorsement of the Board of Education, the Superintendent has authorized a District wide campaign to help alleviate the suffering of victims of the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami that struck Southeast Asia on December 26, 2004, killing and injuring thousands, and destroying billions of dollars worth of property.

Superintendent Roy Romer and Members of the Board of Education have organized a District wide fund-raising campaign to provide much needed assistance to the tsunami victims in Southeast Asia. The goal of this current relief drive is to collect funds for the following agencies:

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
This well-established international organization has set up an International Asia Tsunami Response Fund focusing on four countries: Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia and India. They already had a presence on the ground in these countries so they are ready to start building. They intend to build 25,000 houses, most of them in Sri Lanka. It is a two- year plan at this point but they anticipate that they will likely increase the number of homes.

OPERATION USA
This is a well-established national emergency relief organization that is based in West Hollywood. They have already set up a mobile media clinic in the disaster area and are working with U.S. physicians to provide delivery of emergency supplies. They are sending food to nutritional centers and art supplies for children. Additionally, they are sending play therapists to work with the traumatized children.

UNICEF
This is the children and education fund established by the United Nations in 1947. In South Asia, they have identified four relief priorities:

  • Keeping children alive by supplying clean water and adequate sanitation.
  • Caring for separated children.
  • Making sure that children are protected from exploitation.
  • Helping children cope with trauma by providing counseling support so they can get back in school
